I wonder where UT's went. I shall contemplate investigating.

Perhaps each of the schools will find theirs and restore them to their rightful positions of glory...

I haven't gotten around to it, but there is a case of UT fencing tropies (mostly from the early 90s, I think, SWIFA stuff) in the practice hall, and a case of mixed sports trophies (for a long time, when I was a kid it had the trophy from the 1965 Orange Bowl, complete with oranges.)

A Virginia-based fencer posted these jpegs of past Van Buskirk Memorial Tournament T-shirts (circa early 1980s) on Fencing Net, where I started a parallel thread. It seemed appropriate to post them here, as well.

The 1989 T-shirt courtesy of Espada on Fencing Net, who also sounds like he's Augie.

Not bad. Better than some current tournament T-shirts.
(although the last few Pouj T-shirts were my favorites)

Not to be dense, but is there a special reason for trying to track down 20+ year old trophies? No disrespect intended, just curious as to the attraction... Maybe you should think about getting the hell out of Texas. No disrespect intended. The Van Buskirk was the first king hell regional tournament that everybody had to go to. Before the Longhorn. Before the Duel in Dallas. This old man still has great memories of the unairconditioned Rice gym.

Actually, he has an ulterior motive. Drinking from the cup grants immortality, instantly heals bruises caused by flicks, and gives you an unstoppable fleche. But at a price... Find it, and I'll fence epee!

I'm not gonna tell you to "get the hell outta Texas" or tell you that I'd "give one of your nuts" for 'em, but I will say you're stepping on peoples' toes and this means a lot to fencers in this area. I mean I just have a 5th place verre trophy that I won from the tournament (not very high in retail value), but it means something to me. Do you understand the reason for all the talk now?

Along the same lines...
Responding to the same 1989 T-Shirt being posted on Fencing Net, a fellowing logging in as Durando in Nantes, France wrote:
Oh, and as to the SW Conference trophies, since Fred Sklar saved one of them from teminal warehousing, I've asked if either he can take a digital photo or allow me to come by and take one. It might help folks at other colleges to find theirs.

That picture brings back memories. The people in the picture are Bart and Glen Weathington, and I think the picture was taken by Gloria. I did not send that picture in, and I lost to Al Peters 12 - 11 in the semis that year. I think Al won it, but he used so much energy and tore his hamstring in the end of our bout that his legs were purple for several months. I led the Saber team of Garreth Sarosi, Randall Sims and myself by beating Paul Anderson in the final bout to win the team. Andy Shaw directed.
I won the foil the next day. I think we had 50+ in epee and approximately 70 in foil that year. I remember that we went four rounds of pools and then DEs because helped the Weathington's run the event. We went down to 48, then to 32, then to 16 and then DEs with the prior two rounds for seeding. Then no one could complain about first round pool seedings because the seedings were based on the round before. Longblade remembers these events, and I know Oscar and Curtis Hardy were in the 16.
The person sending in the picture may have been John Wahren, David Adams or maybe Tim Glass because although he was living in Chicago he came back to several Van Buskirks.

Sorry, Augie. I thought Espada might be you after his injury reference (on another Fnet post).
Thanks for identifying our fencers... (which is Bart and which is Glenn?)

I think that Bart is on the left and Glen is on the right. We are going back almost 20 years. I remember giving Glen a hard time about is foot position when he lunged, and he pointed out that Bart had stuck the toe with the point and almost nailed it to the floor. Bart may be at nationals, because he was on the bout committee when I won the vet's in 2003. He is the one that told me that I would earn my A back.
I am still curious about the French posting. We had that French pentathletes and Italians in during the early 80s to the Van Buskirk, but I don't remember them that year. It may be Uno Wahren.

Durando? He's from Texas originally I believe, fenced at UT, and has emigrated to France sometime after that. Or such was my impression from his posts and some PMs.

The fencer who signs on as Espada posted this on Fencing Net: It is amazing what you can find while digging through old boxes. Figured y'all might get a kick out of this - the top 8 in Epee at Van Buskirk 1990.

It's not the Van Buskirk Cup, but... So I just got home a couple of minutes ago and (for various reasons) was in a very down mood. I planned to check the email, grab dinner and go to bed. Then I found an email from Fred Sklar with this photo of the 1956 Southwest Conference Fencing Championship trophy. It picked me up...

I got this the other day from Bill Towry:
Another lost trophy is the Connecticut Trophy. It was given by AFLA-USFA at the same time for the Division with the largest increase in membership for the previous year. North Texas won it two years in a row. While we had it we bought as new silver band for names of the future winners. I still have a photo of it some where, but it would take many hours of searching to find just the photo. We have contacted USFA and several individuals, but the trophy has been forgotten. Good luck in your search Bill T

Yes that's Bart and me on the tee shirt from 1989. Bart is on the left and I am on the right. This photo was taken by my wife, Gloria in our back yard under a huge Pecan tree, that one did survive Rita. We had the tee shirts made here in Beaumont and still have a few left over. I have the complete results for both 1989 and 1990 in storage. I will pull them out and list the names of everyone on the photo and try to find the photos of the other event winners and post them. Bart is now Tennessee Division Chair and runs the Fencing program for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I have been out for many years but keep dreaming of starting back. Another missing traveling trophy is the Braggin Rights of Texas. That one hung on my wall for several years. Hello to everyone old enough to remember the 80's and early 90's. And yes I am enjoying my fifteen minutes of fame. Glenn

I forgot Brian Hunk in the yellow shirt. He was a Dallas native, top 32 in several Div. I NACs (they weren't called that then). Good righthander.
